MTL: Weber

MIN: 2nd

Usually you'd expect something in the range of a 3rd or lower, but Minnesota will have debilitating cap issues the next 3 years with the buyouts of Parise and Suter:

- 12.7M
- 14.7M
- 14.7M
- 1.6M
- 1.6M

I believe Weber's contract (4 x 7.87M) is therefore worth more to Minny than any other team because their cap crunch is so acute. Thus the 2nd.

If Price is unable to return, his cap hit of 10.5M would be extremely valuable too. (Who would ever have thought that contracts for players who can't play would have some kind of tradeable value??)

How does this help Minnesota? How do they gain cap space doing this and how much. Does Weber' contract not count against the cap? I understand how it helps a team like Arizona but don't understand the voodoo of the cap in regards to going over.

A team essentially frees up cap space by having players on LTIR. That's why a contract for a player who will never play again has value to a team that wants to spend to the cap, as well as a team like Arizona looking for a cheap way to hit the cap floor.

I hope this helps, but Cap Friendly can provide you with all the details and explanations. 👍.

Love Cap friendly but it doesn't explain how you gain cap space. Just read a post from Friedman that it wouldn't work for a few of the reasons I thought anyway. Would of been nice though! Thx always appreciate your insight.

Having a player on LTIR allows you to spend over the cap. Weber's cap hit is around 7.8M for 4 more seasons. This would essentially add 7.8M in cap space to Minnesota, who will have a serious cap crunch with the heavy buyout penalties they will be dealing with.

It’s believable but if I were Montreal I would be asking for jack mcbain along with the second rounder. Cause if Weber decides to retire the contract goes back to Nashville but I don’t think they can retain the ltir they are on the hook for the cap space until his contracts is over. That was the agreement in the subban Weber trade.
