MTL trades Hoffman & Kulak (50% ret)

PIT trades Kapanen, Simon, 2022 1st & 5th + 2023 2nd

- Kap helps the salary fit
- Simon is included to fit the 23-man roster (PIT may be able to find the spot internally as well)

Pretty big overpay by the Pens. Habs will be lucky to get a 3rd for Hoffman and maybe a 2nd for Kulak.

MTL trades Allen (retain 50% this year)

TOR trades 2nd & 4th ('22) + Mikheyev's expiring contract (unless they can free up a roster spot some other way)

I wanted to broaden the trade to include Kulak too but leafs have to create roster space somehow.

MTL: Weber

MIN: 2nd

Usually you'd expect something in the range of a 3rd or lower, but Minnesota will have debilitating cap issues the next 3 years with the buyouts of Parise and Suter:

- 12.7M
- 14.7M
- 14.7M
- 1.6M
- 1.6M

I believe Weber's contract (4 x 7.87M) is therefore worth more to Minny than any other team because their cap crunch is so acute. Thus the 2nd.

If Price is unable to return, his cap hit of 10.5M would be extremely valuable too. (Who would ever have thought that contracts for players who can't play would have some kind of tradeable value??)

How does this help Minnesota? How do they gain cap space doing this and how much. Does Weber' contract not count against the cap? I understand how it helps a team like Arizona but don't understand the voodoo of the cap in regards to going over.

A team essentially frees up cap space by having players on LTIR. That's why a contract for a player who will never play again has value to a team that wants to spend to the cap, as well as a team like Arizona looking for a cheap way to hit the cap floor.

I hope this helps, but Cap Friendly can provide you with all the details and explanations. 👍.

Love Cap friendly but it doesn't explain how you gain cap space. Just read a post from Friedman that it wouldn't work for a few of the reasons I thought anyway. Would of been nice though! Thx always appreciate your insight.

Having a player on LTIR allows you to spend over the cap. Weber's cap hit is around 7.8M for 4 more seasons. This would essentially add 7.8M in cap space to Minnesota, who will have a serious cap crunch with the heavy buyout penalties they will be dealing with.

It’s believable but if I were Montreal I would be asking for jack mcbain along with the second rounder. Cause if Weber decides to retire the contract goes back to Nashville but I don’t think they can retain the ltir they are on the hook for the cap space until his contracts is over. That was the agreement in the subban Weber trade.

3-Team Trade:

MTL sends Petry to DAL (940K retained/season)

DAL sends Klingberg to FLA, and a 2nd & 5th ('22) to MTL.

FLA sends a 2nd ('22) to DAL and 3rd ('22) + Thornton to MTL.

- DAL gets a playoff-tested replacement for Klinger for 3 more seasons at a reasonable Cap Hit of 5.31M.

- FLA gets a playoff-tested offensive D whose defensive liabilities can be sheltered appropriately.

- MTL gets 3 picks and cap relief.

I Still think Petry is worth his 6.3 cap hit but having said that it is fair. Make the 3rd and 5th for 2023 to balance out the Habs drafts and its a win for Florida and Dallas and a coin flip for the Habs.

A rare Habs-leafs trade:

MTL trades Chiarot & Kulak (50% retained on each)

TOR trades '22 1st & 2nd, '23 3rd & Engvall

TOR puts their new LTIR cap space to work to get some battle-tested D.

MTL gets 3 picks for the rebuild and takes back a pending RFA contract which allows the leafs cap space to address goaltending.

I wish I could place as much value on Kulak and Chariot as you do. Hard no from the Leafs. Habs jump at that deal.

Yeah…no from MTL. (I see Price was mentioned originally but didn’t seem to make it to the rest of the trade offer? )

That trade offer gets your number blocked by MTL.
